Baby birds are usually a pet owners
first choice in purchasing a bird for a pet. Hand fed baby birds
typically are more trusting of humans then their older counterparts.
Some birds are caught in the wild and later sold to pet stores.
These birds are not gentle or tame and many pet stores now turn
away from purchasing these undomesticated birds.
The trend is becoming more popular
to purchase baby birds from local dealers that have home aviaries
and hand feed the baby birds from the start.
When you are purchasing a pet bird you should always inquire with the pet store
about the origins of the bird you are interested in. A good pet store should
be able to tell you where the bird was purchased from and let you know if the
bird was hand fed as a baby.
You may also be able to locate dealers yourself and purchase
hand fed baby birds directly. Whichever method you prefer,
it is proven that hand fed baby birds make better and more
loveable pets than wild birds that have been caught.
It is also possible to find an injured or wounded baby bird in
the wild, which has been abandoned by its mother, and hand
feed it. Though you may be able to nurse it back to health,
it may be illegal for you to keep the wild bird yourself, unless
you are licensed to do so. You will want to schedule an appointment
with your veterinarian however to make sure that the bird receives
any necessary medical attention.
If you don't have the facilities,
license,or time to take on the responsibility of hand rearing a wild bird,
your veterinarian will be able to point you in the right direction of the
best community resource available to take care of the bird. There are many
bird sanctuaries and shelters that will gladly accept a baby wild bird
and nurse it back to health. Also, many zoos will take baby
birds and aid them in their recovery process before returning
them back to the wild. |
